Science

Science is everywhere in today’s world

It is part of our daily lives, from cooking and gardening, to recycling and comprehending the daily weather report, to reading a map and using a computer.  Advances in technology and science are transforming our world at an incredible pace, and our children’s future will surely be filled with leaps in technology we can only imagine.

Being “science literate” will no longer be just an advantage but an absolute necessity. We can’t escape from the significance of science in our world. But not everyone understands that, or has been taught to think critically, or been provided with the tools to analyse and test a problem or situation.

As a department we strive to make this happen and make Science an enjoyable, fun and stimulating area of learning.

At KS3 pupils are taught a bespoke course written by our science staff that prepares students for the rigorous challenges of the new 9-1 GCSEs.  There are 12 topics in Year 7 and 12 topics in Year 8.  Students are assessed every 7th lesson with an end of unit test which is marked out of 30.

In Year 7 pupils are taught in tutor groups and then set from the beginning of Year 8. They are taught for 5 hours over the two week timetable.

We follow Edexcel 9-1 Biology, Chemistry and Physics and offer some students Combined Science.  Students have 5 hours per fortnight in Year 9 increasing to 9 hours in Years 10 and 11.
