Welcome to the English Department page

The English department is a team of specialist teachers working hard to promote a love of reading, writing and communication as well as a desire amongst students to achieve far reaching goals.  The department boasts a number of passionate teachers with a range of experience from literature to language.  The team attaches great importance to assessment and the impact that quality marking can have on our students' progress.

We are currently striving to raise attainment at GCSE and to maintain the high standards reached by our A Level students.

Pupils in years 7 - 9 have eight 60 minute periods of learning in English per fortnight.  The key stage 3 curriculum for English aims to enrich students by exposing them to a broad range of literature including Shakespeare plays, poetry and pre-twentieth century texts. Through the study of these texts, students will engage in intelligent discussions and be able to independently produce extended written responses to what they have read.

In addition to this, students develop their ability to write for a range of different purposes and audiences. Their creativity is also fostered by opportunities to write using a range of stimuli.

Our key stage 3 curriculum is also designed to ensure that pupils are ready to face the challenge posed by the new style GCSEs in English Language and Literature. All key stage 3 units are directly linked to the GCSE English language and Literature skills. Students begin studying GCSE content after Easter in year 9.
