Design & Technology
Our aim in the Design and Technology Department is to stimulate and maintain pupil interest, enjoyment and curiosity about our subject. To enable our pupils to be familiar with the knowledge, skills, principles and vocabulary, necessary for them to become competent and confident in conceiving, designing, and producing a range of technological products 'of good quality'; and evaluating and improving upon their own technological products and those designed by others.
Staff employ teaching methods and resources, which allow all students to have equal access to Design and Technology and to experience success and enjoyment in their work.

During Key Stage 3, pupils use a wide range of materials to design and make products. They work out their own ideas with precision, taking into account how products will be used, who will use them, how much they cost and their appearance. They develop their understanding of designing and making, by investigating products and finding out about the work of professional designers and the manufacturing industry. They use computers, including computer-aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM) and control software, as an integral part of designing and making. They draw on knowledge and understanding from other areas of the curriculum.
As pupils progress through Key Stage 3 they will complete a range of projects, within the material areas, which involve focused learning tasks and ‘Design and Make’ activities. The projects follow the guidelines set out by the QCA with Year 7 focusing on designing for themselves, Year 8 on designing for others and Year 9 on designing for batch production.
KS3 projects have been planned to allow for progression of learning through each year, whilst building on the learning in previous tasks. Within a project, pupils will be assessed as to their progress at regular intervals; some assessments will be directly related to a level of attainment e.g. writing a plan for the completion of an activity.
