Art & Design

Integral to the subject of art is the idea of putting the child at the centre of learning. This has always been part of our philosophy at William de Ferrers School.

As a department, we place creativity firmly at the heart of the subject.  Creativity cannot be passive. Pupils must be active, they must engage.

We strive to create an atmosphere which is relaxed and stress free, where concentration, self discipline and autonomy can be fostered.  We aim to equip pupils with the skills and knowledge to enable them to make informed decisions and thus express their ideas.

Art key stage 3 curriculum
Pupils are given the opportunity to work with a variety of materials using different tools   and techniques. These may include paint, collage, printmaking, ICT, clay or sculpture. They are introduced to the use of sketchbooks and are encouraged to use them to record observations and gather resources to help stimulate and develop imaginative ideas.

Themes such as Portraits and Different Cultures are introduced whereby pupils are encouraged to look for meanings in their work and in other artists' work, enabling pupils to inform their critical judgement.

Pupils are introduced to more stretching and abstract concepts such as transfiguration, expression and mood, where individual and imaginative responses are encouraged, alongside a developing visual memory and improved observation. They learn about proportion, relative size and physically experience the difference in drawing on a variety of scales.  Skills are extended through a variety of materials in 2 and 3 dimensions and through pair work.

They begin to explore more fully the meanings and context of Artists’ work through the themes of Surrealism and Pop Art in which concepts of Perspective, Abstraction, Symbolism and Dreams are introduced.

Creative thinking and problem solving are encouraged, often with pair or group work, to seek individual and diverse solutions and to stimulate the imagination, memory and visual thinking. Pupils are encouraged to respond visually to verbal description of an artists’ work.

The practical and contextual elements are combined in a theme based mini-project which encourages independent research and individual response. All our schemes of work are taught scaling back from A-Level and GCSE in order to best prepare our students for the demands of further study. From the very beginning of year 7 students are tought and assesed according to GCSE criteria whilst exploring art movements & cultures in exciting ways.

Processes and manipulation of materials includes drawing, painting, printing, Adobe Photoshop, photography, 3D Form through sculpture and relief using clay, wire, card or modrock.
