Teaching and Learning
The William de Ferrers Expert Teaching Framework
Expert teaching does not happen by chance.
It is the product of deliberate design, informed by evidence, refined through practice and responsive to the pupils in front of us.
|
The core premise: If learning is a change in long-term memory, our task at William de Ferrers is to maximise the probability that what is taught is remembered |
Our William de Ferrers Expert Teaching Framework identifies five connected elements that, when thoughtfully engineered, achieve this goal.

The five elements are:
-
Conditions for Learning
-
Adaptation
-
Instruction
-
Practice
-
Assessment
Assessment and adaptation sit at the heart of the model, not as a final stage. They inform and drive all other decisions.
Through these, we calibrate the conditions for learning, sharpen the precision of our instruction and design pupil practice that is deliberate, spaced and purposeful.
This ongoing cycle ensures that every element of our teaching becomes responsive, inclusive and likely to produce durable learning.
Our aim is that our curriculum intent and implementation are embedded securely and consistently across the school and that our teachers have a secure and common understanding of the school’s curriculum intent and our Expert Teaching Framework.
